The true path to wisdom
A traditional tale recounts how a pilgrim tirelessly toured the eighty-eight temples of Shikoku in search of the truth. He would meditate and make offerings at each monastery, wearing out his sandals along the way. However, having completed over half the trip, he had found no answer.
Until one day, beneath the golden evening light, he found an old monk under a tree who was trying to capture on canvas the ever-changing brightness streaming through the trees.
He had heard the painter monk described as the wisest person on the island of Shikoku, so he imagined he would have the answers he was searching for.
Without further delay, he sat down beside him and asked him:
âMaster, I need you to answer a question that has been tormenting me ever since I began this journey: how can I reach the Truth?â
While continuing to apply small brushstrokes of black ink to his canvas, the monk said to him:
âIf you are truly searching for the Truth, there is something you will have to do before anything else.â
This answer raised the pilgrimâs spirits, who with renewed hope began to say:
âI know! I must practice more, is that not so? Devote more hours to meditating, walk for longer stretches on my pilgrimage, fast andâ¦â
The monk softly shook his head, as his face broke into a smile. He waited for the anxious pilgrim to be quiet before finally saying:
âWhat you always need to do, above all else, is to recognize that you might be wrong.â
